Mobile operators unite on global apps platform The world’s largest mobile operators have joined forces to launch
an open international applications platform, marking the largest
unified move to date by the operator community into the mobile apps
space. The so-called ‘Wholesale Applications Community’ will
combine 24 of the world’s largest mobile carriers, including
America Movil, AT&T, Bharti Airtel, China Unicom, Deutsche
Telekom, KT, mobilkom Austria, MTN Group, NTT Docomo, Orange,
Orascom Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telenor, TeliaSonera,
SingTel, SK Telecom, Sprint, VimpelCom and WIND. The four operators
in the Joint Innovation Lab (JIL) mobile apps initiative ?
Vodafone, China Mobile, SoftBank and Verizon Wireless ? are also
included. The group serves a combined 3 billion mobile customers

first smartphone based on its own mobile operating system (OS),
bada. Available globally from April, the HSPA device features very
high-quality screen resolution (thanks to what the South Korean
vendor claims is “the world’s first Super AMOLED display”) and
contains a 5 megapixel camera and internally-developed 1GHz
processor. Samsung’s own user interface ? TouchWiz 3.0 ? aims to
enable a customisable menu and homepage and provide easy access to

Huawei strengthens Android offering Huawei will today unveil a lineup of new Android handsets,
including what it claims is the world’s first HSPA+ smartphone based on
Google’s operating system. The U8800 model (pictured) runs Android 2.1, supports theoretical peak downlink data speeds
of up to 14Mb/s and has a 3.8 inch screen. It will be available in
the third quarter. Meanwhile the Chinese vendor will showcase
another four Android models. Read More  Sony Ericsson cosies up to parent Last night Sony Ericsson announced new Android and Symbian devices
but, in an interview with Show Daily ahead of its press conference, president Bert Nordberg preferred
to talk strategy and synergy with its parent companies. Nordberg
made no bones about the fact the vendor has struggled. “We missed
the window for high-end and touchscreen devices big time,” he said,
noting that “part of the recovery will be much better design and
closer work with our partner Sony… In the past there was no tie-up
between us, the PSP platform and Sony, but you can expect to hear
much more about that. Sir Howard Stringer’s [chairman and CEO of

Mobile World Congress, with announcements planned surrounding its
recent move into software, a femtocell launch, updates on its work
in the embedded mobile market and a meeting for members of its
Green Touch initiative. In an interview with Show Daily, Kenneth Frank, president of the vendor’s solutions and marketing
division, said the company will be “announcing some new
capabilities in support of our Application Enablement vision, which
leverages the best of the Web and telecom worlds by securely
exposing select network resources to application developers and
content partners so they can build new ‘service mash-ups.' " Read More  Orascom chief fires warning shot on operator M&A Naguib Sawiris, the enigmatic executive chairman of Orascom
Telecom, has told Show Daily that the global operator market is on the verge of a major shakeup
that will see many smaller players swallowed. In an exclusive
interview ahead of a speaker appearance at Congress Wednesday,
Sawiris expressed his belief that “the next few years will witness
major consolidation in the telecom operator market. All small and
medium-sized operators are looking for appropriate M&A deals to
be able to secure themselves a place on the new world map of
telecom players. I personally think by the year 2011, the operator
market will look significantly different, comprising of a number of

AT&T CTO tackles capacity issues Ahead of his appearance at Congress Wednesday, AT&T’s chief technology officer, John Donovan, told Show Daily of the challenges the operator faces in attempting to ensure its
network is up to the task of handling the boom in data consumption.
“We’re seeing advanced smartphones like the iPhone driving up to 10
times the amount of usage of other devices on average,” he
reflected. “In fact, about 40 percent of our customer base uses a
smartphone today. Overall, wireless data traffic on the AT&T
network has grown more than 5,000 percent over the past three
years. As more and more advanced smartphones, PDAs and other
devices are introduced, we see this usage trend continuing in the
