General Motors (GM) is deploying IONATE’s Hybrid Intelligent Transformer (HIT) technology at its Romulus Propulsion Systems plant in Michigan, marking the technology company’s first commercial installation in the United States.
The 900,000-square-foot facility produces 10-speed transmissions for GM’s full-size trucks and SUVs and recently received a $300 million investment to expand production capacity.
The Hybrid Intelligent Transformer (HIT) is designed to provide real-time visibility into electrical conditions at the connection point between the grid and industrial facilities. According to IONATE, the system can sense, analyze and resolve power disturbances while improving visibility into energy use and power quality.
Engineering teams from GM and IONATE are completing build and testing of U.S.-standard 3MVA IEEE units ahead of installation at the Romulus site. Additional GM facilities are also being considered for future deployments.

The deployment comes as manufacturers and utilities look to modernize electrical infrastructure amid growing industrial electrification and rising energy demand.
