In addition to the major OEMs, mid tier manufacturers are rapidly expanding their footprint to meet accelerating demand across the US. Since 2019, demand for generator step up units has increased by 274%, while substation power transformers have risen by 116%, with further growth expected.

The graphic highlights a selection of current or announced developments from key mid tier players, including Giga Energy, JST transformateurs, TMC TRANSFORMERS, HD Hyundai Electric America, Mitsubishi Electric, Cleveland-Cliffs, and Virginia Transformer Corp.

It is also worth noting ERMCO-ECI’s significant investment in a new 560,000 sq ft facility in Arizona, following the expansion of its Tennessee plant and the acquisition of an additional facility in Bristol, Wisconsin.

This wave of expansion builds on several recently completed projects across the sector, including Delta Star, Inc. in Virginia, CMI (Central Moloney) in Florida, and MGM Transformers in Texas.

The scale of manufacturing expansion really does show the structural demand growth across the transformer market, signalling the huge investment in the US grid in the coming years!
