ABB has agreed to acquire Italian transformer manufacturer Specialtrasfo as part of its strategy to strengthen offerings for industrial electrification and specialised power applications.
The transaction, announced on 12 May, is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Specialtrasfo, headquartered in Italy, designs and manufactures customised transformers for industrial sectors including renewable energy, oil and gas, hydrogen, steel production, and infrastructure projects. The company has operated for nearly 80 years and supplies products to customers in more than 70 countries.
ABB said the acquisition will expand its transformer and electrification capabilities at a time of increasing global demand for power infrastructure driven by industrial decarbonisation, electrification, renewable energy integration, and expansion of data centres.
Following completion of the deal, Specialtrasfo will become part of ABB’s Motion business area, which focuses on electrification technologies, motors, drives, and industrial energy solutions.
The acquisition reflects broader growth in the specialised transformer market, where demand is increasing for custom-engineered equipment capable of supporting high-load industrial processes and emerging energy applications such as hydrogen production and renewable integration.
Industry analysts have identified transformers and grid equipment as one of the fastest-growing segments of the electrification market due to aging infrastructure, rising electricity demand, and accelerating industrial investment in low-carbon technologies.
The transaction also continues ABB’s wider acquisition strategy aimed at expanding technical capabilities and strengthening its position in electrification and industrial automation markets.
